Sudbury Arts Council invites member artists, arts patrons and new members to attend its annual Annual General Meeting (AGM) Monday, November 24 at the Indie Cinema, 162 Mackenzie Street at 7 pm.

MINUTES OF THE 2024 AGM

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

7 pm, Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at Sudbury Indie Cinema

Welcome and Introduction of Nickel City Sound Quartet

President Derek Young welcomed members and guests to the AGM. He shared information about SAC over the past 50 years, then introduced the Nickel City Sound Quartet to entertain.

Secretary Vicki Gilhula made a motion to accept the AGM Agenda, seconded by Carmen, Passed.

Vicki made a motion to accept the Minutes of 2023 Annual General Meeting, seconded by Carmen Martorella, Passed.

Zoi Mulroy Introduced 2024 Board Members in addition to herself, Derek Young, Judi Straughan, Vicki Gilhula, Carmen Martorella, Dieter Buse, Emma Munro, Don Johnston and Kerry Loken.

Dieter is retiring from the board after eight years; Emma and Kerry are leaving the board after one term.

4a) Zoi made motion to confirm proposed slate of 2025 Board Members:

Derek Young, Judi Straughan, Vicki Gilhula, Don Johnston, Zoi Mulroy, Carmen Martorella, Samantha Buttery, Céline Laprise and Michael Guillemette, seconded by John Lindsay. Passed.

Zoi invited anyone who is interested in joining to board to send an email of intent to .

Winners of Sudbury Arts Council’s 2025 Calendar: Don Johnston gave the names of the 2025 Calendar photographers. The theme for 2025 is All Creatures Large and Small, Northern Ontario Style. The winning photographers receive an $80 fee from Sudbury Arts Council for the use of each photo and 4 complimentary calendars from Journal Printing. Winning entrants are Lesley Morton, Chris Blomme, Gary Desabrais Hugh and Annalee McKechnie, Miriam McDonald, Harriet Kideckel Michel Rainville, Paul Truskosk, Lise Dubuc and Max Weir

Financial Report: Celine presented the Financial Report. SAC’s fiscal year is April 2023 to March 2024. Bank balance March 31: $30,489.25 compared to $36,485.69.Expenses included Arts Crawl 2023 expenses, social media-related charges and administrative charges.Revenues included Grants $9,000, sponsorships $7,032,50; donations $330, memberships $1,333.43; art crawl fees $340.Expenses included $3,223 for Arts Crawl, professional fees and accounting $5,184.44; website 3,223.74. Bank balance as of November 27, 2024: $29,584. SAC does not have any debts or liabilities.Celine made motion to accept Financial Report, seconded by Carmen, Passed.

Presentation of Oryst Sawchuk Award. Vicki presented the award to the owners of Knox Hall and The Night Owl, Liana Bacon and Dan Guillemette for their contributions to the city’s art scene.

Vicki made motion to increase membership fees from $20 to $30 for individuals and from $35 to $50 for organizations, seconded by Carmen. Passed, yes 13; 3 against. There was discussion that the $10 increase was too much a jump and should be increased by smaller increments. Others said the increase after 20 years or more was acceptable considering inflation. Carmen gave a brief presentation about the SAC plans for a membership drive and the offering of incentive such as free tickets to the Indie Cinema and coupons for coffee at Books and Beans

50th Anniversary Project Launch Judi introduced SAC’s plans to honour 50 people who have made a difference in Sudbury’s arts scene over the past 50 years with a book and an arts installation at  the new Cultural Hub at Tom Davies Square .She unveiled the 50 People Logo and invited nominations through the SAC website. The deadline for nominations is April 1, 2025.  A jury will select the 50.

Reception was positive and applauded by attendees.

Arts Quiz and Prizes

Breaking News: Emily Trottier, the municipal staff lead for arts, culture and film in her role as Business Development Officer with the City of Greater Sudbury.  She spoke about the city is participating the artsvest program which matches funders, mentors with arts non profit groups pursuing new ideas with the plan rolling out in February,

Artists and Arts Groups Sharing

Presenters included Jeff McIntyre from the Sudbury BIA who spoke about about its strategy to work with arts groups to create events downtown. They have increased support for events and offer marketing and promotion; and handle red tape involved in host events downtown such as street closure.

Other Business Kathy Browning introduced at the beginning of the meeting that SAC should have more information about its members on its website. Generally agreed it was a good idea but SAC doesn’t have staff and needs more volunteers.
