Our mission is to connect, communicate and celebrate. SAC brings together members of the arts community and their audiences. SAC is a source of who’s who and what’s happening within the region. As an arts umbrella organization, it advocates on behalf of all artists and is a source of relevant information. SAC encourages awareness and appreciation of the wide diversity of Arts, Culture and Heritage in our area.
The Sudbury Arts Council brings attention and support to the artistic community in Greater Sudbury. SAC makes art accessible for everyone, encouraging participation and appreciation of art throughout the community. It advocates and promotes equally for Anglophone, Francophone, and Indigenous arts and culture groups in our city, understanding the deeply important role each plays in making up our unique arts scene, and overall culture.
We are especially committed to encouraging emerging artists and assisting them to establish a network within the artistic community. We strive to broaden the audience for the arts by awakening new audiences.
History and Projects
The Sudbury Arts Council / Conseil des arts de Sudbury (SAC) is a non-profit organization founded on July 31, 1974.
SAC was instrumental in the establishment of Cinéfest, the Artists' Studio Tour, and the Sudbury Writers’ Guild, as well as established the Sudbury Food Bank’s Christmas Art Card project and Art of Dessert Evening, which are now managed independently by the Sudbury Food Bank.
It supports the current Downtown Sudbury Arts Crawl, and established Wordstock Literary Festival in 2013. It co-created the Sudbury Celebration of the Arts, an award gala which awards over $10,000 annually to local artists. SAC also established Gallery 6500, an art gallery at the local Steelworker's Hall.
Monthly, it funds musical performances at the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce’s events, as well as sponsors artists for various events like Nuit Blanche, the Art Crawl, and more. It also organizes various networking events for professional artists. Another recent, successful initiative organized by SAC is the Passport to the Arts, which offers a sampling of events from different arts groups to passport holders, aiding in audience building and promotion for participating organizations.
SAC also collects and assembles data from the region's arts professionals in order to create an annual statistical report on the state of the arts in Sudbury. We also maintain arts and culture events calendar for the city, as well as this website which aids in the promotion of our activities and those of other professional arts organizations, along with our weekly newsletters to the community.
