McCollom, Crystal (Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Sudbury Irish Arts Association Inc.): CCE SIAAI concerns itself with the development of an environment conducive to: promoting traditional Irish music and arts in all its forms; promoting, in particular, the playing of the harp and uilleann pipes locally; promoting Irish traditional dancing and singing with the traditional music; fostering and promoting the use of the Irish language; creating a closer bond among all lovers of Irish music and culture.

Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Sudbury Irish Arts Association Inc. (a non-profit, charitable organization) was orginally formed on March 17, 1996 under the name Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Sudbury Branch. Our finances are reviewed and we carry on a number of fundraising activities during the year, including membership fees, events and ticket sales. We have a Board of Directors and a Constitution and Bi-Laws (March 2009). Since the beginning, we have produced 14 Irish Celtic fairs (attendance from 600-1200), and ran a variety of weekly programs, large community shows (e.g. Echoes of Erin) and performed in countless venues. At the last Echoes of Erin Irish show hosted in the community, there were 700-800 attendees and 45 volunteer participants. We also train local adult singers, dancers and speakers of Irish and also children to dance, sing, speak Irish, Irsh crafts, do plays, and play fiddles and thin whistles. Out programs are provided on a weekly basis to children, youth and adults. We also run a week long Irish Summer School which is attended by (average) 10-30 children. Our activities in public are usually directed towards all ages including seniors of any ethnicity. We regularly perform for the residents of Long-Term Care facilities. More recently we have organized a number of ceili dances (80-100 attence). Our dancers and Irish speakers attend events and competitions across the province. We have now been funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation to provide set dancing (similar to square dancing) lessons in the community. This is all been possible of a core group of dedicated community volunteers.

The objectives/activities for which the corporation is incorporated are:

  • To educate and increase the public’s understanding and appreciation of the arts by providing performances of an artistic nature in public places, senior citizen homes, churches, community centres and edicational institutions and by providing seminars on topics relating to such performances.
  • To provide instructional seminars on topics related to the performing and visual arts.
  • To produce performing arts festivals for the purposes of educating and advancing the public’s undertstnading and appreciation of Irish culture.
