Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts will be held on

On Wednesday, June 6, the 2018 Mayor's Celebration of the Arts will be held at a gala reception at the Sudbury Theatre Centre. The finalists were announced at a news conference this morning.

The awards event, now in its fifth year, is a project of the Sudbury Arts Council in collaboration with Regroupement des organismes culturels de Sudbury (ROCS).  In addition to the honour of being recognized by their peers, the artists will be awarded cash bursaries to assist their continued pursuit of their creative projects.

The Award for Outstanding Emerging Artist will be presented to a professional artist with 10 years or less of professional artistic practice for the excellence and creativity of her or his artworks and performances. The nominees are actor/producer/director Alessandro Costantini; author/artist Danielle Daniel and performer/promoter Max Merrifield.

The Award for Outstanding Mid-Career Artist will be presented to a mid-career artist with more than 10 years of experience, for his or her sustained efforts to pursue a professional career in the arts and to produce new works, while contributing to the development and betterment of the Greater Sudbury arts community. The nominees are musician Edouard Landry, poet Kim Fahner and director/actor/playwright Miriam Cusson.

The Award for Exceptional Achievement in the Arts will be presented to a professional artist for exceptional contribution to the arts during his or her career spanning more than 25 years through an extensive body of works in one or several disciplines, as well as through her/his contribution over time to the development and betterment of the Greater Sudbury arts community. The nominees are musician/composer/sound designer Dan Bedard, publisher denise truax, and musician/promoter Paul Loewenberg.

The 2018 Mayor's Celebration of the Arts gala is pleased to host an exhibition of talented secondary school artists curated by the Art Gallery of Sudbury.  In addition, there will be live stage performances throughout the evening. A popular silent auction is made possible by generous donations from supporters of the arts.  Emcee for the evening is the actor and musician Stef Paquette.  

A special award honouring her achievement will be presented by the Sudbury Arts Council to musician Iona Reed-Pukara.

The Award for Outstanding Mid-Career Artist with a cash award goes to a professional mid-career artist with approximately 10 – 25 years of experience for his or her sustained efforts topursue a professional career in the arts and to produce new works, while contributing to the development and betterment of the arts in Greater Sudbury.

The Award for Exceptional Achievement in the Arts, which comes with a cash prize,goes to a professional artist for exceptional contributions to the arts during a career spanning more than 25 years. The award pays tribute to an extensive body of works in one or several disciplines, as well as through her/his contribution over time to the development and betterment of the arts community in Ontario and Canada.
