This year’s event will be emceed by actor/comedian Stef Paquette, who won an MCA in 2015.
The committee organizing the 2018 Mayor’s Celebration of Arts (MCA), June 6 at the Sudbury Theatre Centre is expecting a full house.
“We are honouring 10 artists this year and the event is creating quite a buzz,” said MCA committee chair Vicki Gilhula.
Over the past five years, Regroupement des organismes culturels de Sudbury (ROCS) and Sudbury Arts Council (SAC) have worked together to product the MCA gala and have raised more than $50,000 to support artists in this community.
“Not only do we give winners and finalists cash prizes, we pay all the artists who perform. I know this doesn’t sound like a big deal but many charities ask artists to perform for free or donate their work. There is nothing wrong with that but our committee wants to make sure the artists get paid,” said Gilhula.
“We will be paying a special tribute to Iona Reed Pukara, a gifted musician who has taught thousands of people to love music. She is a generous spirit and has given so much of her time.”
The committee will present awards to outstanding emerging and mid-career artists as well presenting one artist with an excellence in the arts award.
“The excellence in arts award is presented to an artist who has not only achieved success in their career but who has also mentored other artists or given back to the community in some way.
This year’s event will be emceed by actor/comedian Stef Paquette, who won an MCA in 2015. Yes Theatre, Kevin Closs and Jamie Dupuis will entertain.
“There will be an art exhibit, a silence auction as well as a catered reception,” says Gilhula. “I have to admit, we are very busy will all the little details.”
Tickets are available at the Sudbury Theatre Centre DiBrina box office and are $50 plus handling charges.
