On March 5, 2018, the cabinet of the capital fundraising campaign launched the “Share Our Sense of Place” campaign at Salute Coffee in downtown Sudbury. At that event, it was announced that the first private-sector and community donors had contributed a total of $250,000. These were the families of Laurette and Arnel Michel and of Pascal Sabourin, the firms Bestech and Collins Barrow, and the Noëlville and Alban service centres of Caisse populaire Alliance.
Donations totalling more than $1 million announced
In less than three months, the “Share Our Sense of Place” campaign has announced a number of large donations totalling $1,175,000.
On March 27, $50,000 from Club Richelieu Sudbury.
On April 18, $250,000 from Desjardins.
On May 9, $375,000 from the founders of Place des Arts and their members.
On June 21, $250,000 from the families of Daniel Poulin / Louise Mullally and Laura Bélanger, and Greater Sudbury’s five Clubs Richelieu.
The capital campaign is still going on, while the community campaign is in the organizing phase and will be launched in the fall.
The architects for Place des Arts (the Yallowega Bélanger Salach Architecture + Moriyama & Teshima Architects consortium) started work last winter. They held in-depth discussions with all of the organizations that will have spaces in Place des Arts. In June, they completed an important step in the design phase, as each founding member signed off on the blueprints. So the work is proceeding quickly, on track for the sod-turning.
Lise Beaudry, the jury’s choice to create the public artwork
Last winter, Place des Arts revealed the name of the artist who will design its public artwork. Following a competition that attracted several applicants and generated a great deal of interest across the country, a seven-person jury selected Lise Beaudry, a visual artist and photographer. A native of Earlton, she will create a work of art that will be incorporated into the structure of Place des Arts. Her concept consists of a sculpture installation composed of thousands of photos that will form a pillar illustrating the history of the key organizations and personalities that have supported and shaped Place des Arts over the years. In the next edition of the newsletter, we will have an interview with artist Lise Beaudry.
